In traditional terms we might say that we need a unit of behavior defined in terms of both “form and meaning.” The analysis of nonverbal behavior has clarified the nature of such a unit under laboratory conditions in which the expediency of the unit may be submitted to rigorous checks. An extrapolation of this concept to the verbal field is central to the analysis represented by the rest of this book. (p. 20)
