Thorndike’s measure—the time taken to escape— involved the elimination of other behavior, and his curve depended upon the number of different things a cat might do in a particular box. It also depended upon the behavior which the experimenter or the apparatus happened to select as “successful” and upon whether this was common or rare in comparison with other behavior evoked in the box.” (p. 60)
