Modeling, telling, and teaching are the functions of the social environments called cultures. Different cultures emerge from different contingencies of variation and selection and differ in the extent to which they help their members solve their problems. Members who solve them are more likely to survive, and with them survive the practices of the culture. In other words cultures evolve, in a third kind of variation and selection. (p. 665)
