In face-to-face contact with another person, references to an initiating self are unavoidable. There is a ‘you,’ and there is an ‘I.’ I see what ‘you’ do and hear what ‘you’ say and you see what ‘I’ do and hear what ‘I’ say. We do not see the histories of selection responsible for what is done and therefore infer an internal origination, but the successful use of the vernacular in the practice of psychology offers no support for its use in a science.
