Interval and ratio schedules have different effects for several reasons. When a reinforcement is scheduled by a timer, the probability of reinforcement increases during any pause, and the first responses after pauses are especially likely to be reinforced. On ratio schedules responses which are part of short runs are likely to be reinforced. (p. 139)
